Entry-level artificial intelligence-based vision is the goal of Renesas microcontrollers.

As part of the RZ/V series, the new RZ/V2L has the company's "DRP-AI" artificial intelligence accelerator, and its operating frequency and memory interface have been expanded for entry-level applications.

DRP-AI provides real-time inference and image processing through camera support (such as color correction and noise reduction).

In this case, it is described as "1Top/s/W class") and can run Tiny YOLOv2 at 28 frames.

Renesas Electronics said: "This enables customers to develop AI-based vision applications, such as point-of-sale terminals and robotic vacuum cleaners, without the need for an external image processor."

It is packaged in 15 x 15mm or 21 x 12mm BGA, compatible with existing general-purpose MPU pins, allowing RZ/G2L users to upgrade processors that support AI.

As part of the RZ/V2L development environment, Renesas Electronics provides DRP-AI Translator, a tool that automatically converts AI models into executable formats. The input format is the industry standard ONNX (Open Neural Network Exchange).

Provide RZ/V2L evaluation board, and provide: "Circuit diagram and circuit board layout, including power supply circuit and timing tree".

A power management IC optimized for RZ/V2L is in preparation, and an example combining them is expected to be launched in the second half of this year.
