Howard, who scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, finished with seven rebounds and three steals — the last of which came when she plucked a pass from Natasha Cloud, was fouled and hit 1 of 2 from the foul line to make it 72-70 with 24.6 second to go. Cloud led Washington with 17 points and eight assists.

Blade Tidwell surrendered just three hits in 7 2/3 shutout innings, Jordan Beck hit two of No. 1 overall seed Tennessee’s five home runs and the Volunteers rolled to a 10-0 victory over Alabama State in the Knoxville Regional. Tennessee (54-7), which has won nine straight, will play the winner of Friday’s nightcap between Campbell and Georgia Tech on Saturday. Alabama State (34-24) will play an elimination game against the loser earlier Saturday. Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price has won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The award is given to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication. Price worked his way back to hockey from knee surgery and after seeking help of the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program to help with substance use. He played his first game of the season in April despite the Canadiens being near the bottom of the league standings. His playing future is now uncertain. Veterans Patrick Marleau and Zdeno Chara were the other finalists for the Masterton as voted on by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

SAN FRANCISCO — Al Horford, known over the course of 15 seasons for his calm and quiet leadership, has let his emotions out this postseason.

Cardinals star Paul Goldschmidt could set the longest hitting streak of his career if he’s successful in both games of a day-night doubleheader at Wrigley Field on Saturday. Goldschmidt homered to extend his string to 25 games as St. Louis routed the Chicago Cubs 14-5 on Friday. The six-time All-Star had a 26-game hitting streak with Arizona in 2013. Goldschmidt has 10 homers and 36 RBIs in his last 22 games, a stretch that began May 11.

Jin Young Ko never seems to stress. Nor does she let up. The world’s No. 1 player vaulted into contention for a third major championship Friday, playing the final five holes in 3 under to pull within three shots of second-round Minjee Lee and Mina Harigae at the U.S. Women’s Open. Harigae and Lee were at 9-under 133 at Pine Needles. Lee shot a 5-under 66, and Harigae had a 69. Three-time major champion Anna Nordqvist and Hye-Jin Choi, who shot a 64 to come within a shot of matching the lowest round in the event’s history, were 7 under. Ko was tied for fifth at 6 under with amateur Ingrid Lindblad. Ko shot 67, and Lindblad had a 71.

Given how much he enjoys fantasy football, it shouldn’t be surprising that Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi had a lot of thoughts about the slap heard around the baseball world.

Top-eight national seeds Stanford, Texas A&M and East Carolina had easy wins on their home fields in NCAA baseball regional openers. Vanderbilt, which has reached the last two College World Series finals, continued its late-season swoon and will have to fight its way out of the loser’s bracket to advance. Conference USA pitcher of the year Tanner Hall pitched four-hit ball over eight shutout innings in Southern Mississippi’s 2-0 victory over Army. Campbell went deep four times in a 15-8 win over Georgia Tech. The Camels have homered in 20 straight games.

Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes says Minnesota Twins broadcaster Jim Kaat reached out and apologized after referring to New York’s breakout pitching star as “Nestor the Molester” during a broadcast Thursday night. Cortes says the 83-year-old Hall of Fame pitcher didn't need to apologize, and he understood that “we all make mistakes.” Cortes says he didn't think Kaat had any malice in the remark. Kaat was explaining that Cortes had become one of his favorite pitchers during the telecast of a game between Minnesota and Detroit when he used the offensive nickname.

Former Brazil defender Alex says he has undergone heart bypass surgery after four blocked arteries were discovered. The 39-year-old retired from soccer in 2016 after a long and successful career playing for Chelsea, PSV Eindhoven, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan. Alex’ former club Santos posted on its social media channels a video of the former defender at a hospital in an undisclosed location while he recovers. The Champions League winner with Chelsea in 2012 says he had just left the intensive care unit and will remain at the hospital for another six days.

Murphy Stehly had the only other multi-hit game for Texas, going 3 for 5. Big 12 player of the year Ivan Melendez went 1 for 4 with a double and two runs scored.

The Los Angeles Dodgers opened the season with an all-time high $310.6 million payroll for purposes of the luxury tax and are on track to pay a record tax of nearly $47 million. Jack Moss capped it by doubling in two runs in the eighth for a six-run lead. Texas A&M starter Micah Dallas (6-3) went five innings and allowed just one earned run. Joseph Menefee struck out seven in three innings.

Tanner Hall struck out nine in eight innings for his ninth win of the season and No. 11 national seed Southern Miss beat Army 2-0 in the Hattiesburg Regional. Hall retired the first 11 batters, including six strikeouts, to help ensure the Golden Eagles’ eighth shutout of the season. He also retired the final seven batters he faced, including a 10-pitch seventh and a seven-pitch eighth. Landon Harper entered in the ninth for his 12th save.
