Rex Miller, co-director of CNN Films, HBO Max and Magnolia Pictures' Arthur Ashe new documentary "Citizen Ashe" said: "Tennis is in a short moment."

"I made a few tennis movies. As a tennis player, I like to watch them."

Miller is not alone in this love.

"Citizen Ashe" (Citizen Ashe) is a new documentary about American tennis legend Ashe. He became the first black man to not only win the U.S. Open, but later the Wimbledon Championship. The premiere in New York. But the doctor is not alone in the impressive lineup of tennis movies and TV shows that have appeared recently.

This year also witnessed the release of Warner Bros. King Richard tells the story of Richard Williams, father of tennis star Serena and Venus Williams. In addition, Netflix's Untold sports documentary series features an episode with the theme of American tennis player Mardy Fish. In 2019, Amazon produced a documentary called Resurifying, which tells the story of British tennis player Andy Murray. Tennis legends are even popular among teenagers-John McEnroe plays himself as the narrator of Mindy Carling's Netflix series "I Never Been."

But Sam Pollard (MLK/FBI, Mr. Soul!), who co-directed "Citizen Ash" with Miller, believes that the recent tennis content craze is not necessarily related to tennis, but a rich and inspiring story about the sport. related.

"None of these movies are really about tennis. They are about bigger things," Pollard told MovieMaker. "King Richard told the story of his family persevering in great difficulties. I think Arthur's story is more about his activism, his personal journey, and tennis is more of its background. "

"Any tennis player of color may know and understand what Arthur Ashe has achieved on and off the court," Pollard added. "I think today's athletes stand on the shoulders of Arthur Ashe, Jackie Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, Bill Russell and many others."

In general, Citizen Ashe took five years to complete. Miller and his team decided to introduce Pollard in the later stage to assist with some editing, because as Miller explained, there are so many details in his life that it is difficult to make a decision on the cutting room floor What's left.

"I like to put everything in the pot. Oh, this is funny, oh, this is so funny. How can we not put this in? There are many things that I find very interesting, as we said, basic Everyone was killed-my little darlings were killed one by one," Miller said.

Fortunately for him, killing the darling is one of Pollard's specialties.

"You always have to make difficult decisions. We have a part in the movie about Arthur's book "The Hard Road to Glory", although we think this is a very important part of his life, but we It just couldn't make it as strong as we thought, so it ended up on the floor of the cutting room," Pollard said. "When you write a biography, some people have to put everything in, but I think the opposite is true. I always want the most important things to stand out dramatic and emotionally. If other things are still part of his life[ But] It’s not so dramatic, I’ll ignore it because... I believe documentaries are not just about information. It’s about presenting a very dramatic story with texture and nuance. We were able to pass Citizen Ashe Achieve this goal."

"Citizen Ash" will be released in New York on Friday and in Los Angeles on December 10. It will be broadcast on CNN and on HBO Max in 2022.
