Runners like new, faster Waffle House course; Oxford’s George, White Plains’ Conn win individual races; Alexandria girls win in Odenville

By Al Muskewitz East Alabama Sports Today OXFORD — They took the snake out of the grass and everybody had a fast race. The cross country runners in Oxford Waffle House Invitational ran a new routing for the course at Choccolocco Park Saturday and almost to a man they said it was a faster and more enjoyable run than they had in the old configuration. In a design created by Jacksonville State for its college meets last year, the course basically took out the multiple switchbacks in the middle portion of the race for a smoother transition to the finish. The 2021 Waffle House had already been run when JSU changed the course, so this was the first time the race had been run on this layout. “We could have run it the old way” said Oxford coach Landon Delozier, whose team ran the new routing in last year’s JSU Foothills high school race. “I let the kids have a lot of input in a lot of the things that we do and this is especially one of those. “I asked the kids today was last year’s course better or this year’s course and they thought that this year’s course was faster. If you think it’s faster then that’s what you’re going to run better on anyway, so that’s what we rolled with.” Oxford teammates Noah George (16:39.13) and Evan Somers (17:36.76) finished 1-2 in the boys race. White Plains’ Maddyn Conn won the girls race (19:31.58) with Oxford training partner Katie Keur right on her heels (19:32.81). George won last year’s race on the old configuration in 16:58.92. Catherine Aaron of Catholic-Montgomery won last year’s girls race is 20:44.85. In fact, this year’s winning times were faster than all but one of the boys races since the Waffle House moved to Choccolocco Park in 2018 and all but two of the girls races in that span. For Somers, who had been running for only two years, it was his best career finish. For Conn, it was her second race win in a row. For Keur, it was a personal best by seven seconds and a school record. “When you open with a school record and PR, you’re set for a good season,” Delozier said. Oak Mountain won both team races. Oxford finished second in the boys and Glencoe was second in the girls. This story will be updated with insights from the winners.

ODENVILLE — Jojo Watson and Michaela Moore went 2-3 and the Alexandria girls placed their top four runners in the top 11 to claim their second win in as many races this season at the St. Clair County Classic. Watson (22:43.02) and Wildcat Twilight 5A-7A girls winner Michaela Moore (22:55.64) finished right behind winner Mabry Free of Cullman (22:10.42), but the Lady Cubs also had the 10th and 11th counters and scored 45 points to edge Cullman by five in the team race. Alexandria and Donoho finished third and fourth, respectively, in the boys race. Jonah Medders led the Valley Cubs to the line with a sixth-place 18:45.62. Riley Goodson was Donoho’s fastest runner at 20:22.78 (16th). “I am happy with the way both teams ran today,” Alexandria coach Phillip Hartsfield said. “They are working hard and that hard work is paying off. Jojo was my first finisher and Michaela my second, so they have a battle going on between them, which is only going to make us better.” Girls team scores: Alexandria 45, Cullman 50, Holy Spirit 65, Ashville 87, Cleveland 98, Leeds 156.
