Man City vs. Bayern soccer at Lambeau Field in Green Bay what we know

GREEN BAY – Two of the best football teams in the world will play at Lambeau Field in July — and neither of them is the Green Bay Packers.

FC Bayern Munich of Germany and Manchester City Football Club of England will play a preseason exhibition match in Green Bay. It'll be the first soccer match at Lambeau Field, bringing an entirely new culture to the iconic venue.

To be sure, the Packers haven't confirmed the match is actually a thing, but it's understood that it will come off. Here's what we know so far:

The game will be played July 23 at Lambeau Field. That'll be the Saturday before the Packers' annual shareholders meeting is traditionally held — and before the start of training camp.

Other details haven't been announced, such as ticket prices, how tickets can be purchased and the game time. Or even, as mentioned, that there will be a match. Those details should be available about mid-April.

The Lambeau Field playing surface isn't large enough for a regulation soccer pitch, but it'll work for an exhibition.

A regulation soccer field as defined by FIFA, the sport's governing body, is between 110 to 120 yards long, and 70 to 80 yards wide. Lambeau Field's turf is 120 yards long by 53 ⅓ yards wide, and the stadium floor isn't big enough to expand the field.

Manchester City and Bayern Munich are two of the top teams in European soccer —  unless, of course, you ask the fans of any other team. Man City, or just City, as it's known, is the defending Premier League champion and leads the league again this year.

Bayern Munich is the defending Bundesliga champion since pretty much forever, and leads the league again this year. It won 31 national titles in Germany, the most by any club.

Side note: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will play one game at Allianz Arena, Bayern's stadium, during the 2022 season. The Packers will play at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

According to Forbes, Bayern Munich was the 10th-most valuable professional sports team in the world in 2021. Forbes estimated its value at $4.21 billion. Manchester City tied for 13th with the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL at $4 billion. By comparison, the Packers were 31st at $3.05 billion.

Both teams are older than the Packers, who were founded in 1919. What became Man City was founded in 1880. Bayern kicked off in 1900.

As a rule, Major League Soccer, the 28-team American soccer league, plays in soccer-specific stadiums. There are exceptions, such as Chicago's Soldier Field, home to the Chicago Fire and the American football Bears; Yankee Stadium, home to New York City FC and baseball's Yankees; and Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home to Atlanta United FC and the American football Falcons.

Other NFL stadiums have hosted International Champions Cup matches, a preseason exhibition tournament held around the country.

The Man City-Bayern match is not part of the International Champions Cup because, as noted, Lambeau doesn't have a regulation pitch. It's simply a preseason friendly — soccer's name for exhibition matches.

Amid rumors of hotels selling out already, there is some truth, although it's not necessarily soccer-related.

Green Bay's Hyatt Regency, for example, is sold out for the annual Kitsunecon sci-fi convention. General manager Kristine Hall said the group of 2,500-3,000 members meets regularly that weekend in downtown Green Bay and this will be its first time back since the COVID-19 outbreak.

EAA's AirVenture fly-in begins July 25 in Oshkosh. AirVenture 2021 reported attendance of more than 600,000. Inevitably, they book hotel rooms from Milwaukee to Green Bay.

"It sounds like a few (reservations) have come in, but given it hasn’t been officially announced, I’m not surprised," said Brad Toll, president and CEO of Discover Green Bay tourism bureau. "That is 'move-in' weekend for EAA, so some hotels already have a number of reservations on the books."

Also, you can bet the European teams made sure their accommodations were locked up before the general public became aware of the event.

As mentioned, the Packers' annual shareholders meeting will be the following week, followed by the opening of training camp. Those events won't necessarily take up many hotel rooms the weekend of the soccer match, but there will be some overlap.

The Green Bay area has more than 4,400 hotel rooms.
