What is being counted here? U.S. collegians — members of an NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA institution — during the 2022 track & field season and appeared on World Athletics’ provisional entry list for the 2022 World Athletics Championships. This count does include those entered as alternates and members of relay pools. Ultimately, everyone counted may not participate.

To compare, 70 collegians from 47 institutions representing 31 different countries participated at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Allow us to take a closer look at those 63 men and 60 women who are entered to compete from July 15-24 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Many of those collegians in attendance already competed on those rejuvenated hallowed grounds at least once this year with the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in early June – some twice, with the USATF Outdoor Championships later that same month. Others will be making their first trip to TrackTown USA.

Now, out of those 123 collegians entered, 19 are ranked among the top-5 in the world in their respective events going into the biggest athletics meeting of the year.

It’s safe to say we could be in store for some incredible performances in the Emerald City.

Collegians aren’t strangers winning medals at the World Athletics Championships.

Look no further than 2019, the last time the World Athletics Championships were held.

Twelve of the 70 collegians entered in 2019 earned medals in Doha, Qatar, including two individual world champions: Grant Holloway in the 110-meter hurdles and Anderson Peters in the javelin throw (Holloway would later win The Bowerman that same year). Mondo Duplantis took silver in the pole vault, while the other nine athletes were members of top-3 relay teams.

Expect the 2022 World Athletics Championships to treat collegians even better.

Competition gets underway tomorrow morning at 9:05 am PT with qualifying in the men’s hammer and wraps up next Sunday, July 24, with the women’s 4×400 relay.
