On Tuesday, New York City park officials and local leaders cut the ribbon at a new artificial turf field at the North Jackson Heights Recreation Ground.

The playground is located on North Avenue-between 93rd Street and 94th Street-and has undergone a $1.75 million overhaul, which includes the reconstruction of the existing artificial turf field and drainage system.

The renovation also includes new water dispensers, benches and a new rubber surface basketball court area with new backboards. The upgrade was completed in September, five months earlier than originally planned.

New York City Parks Commissioner Gabrielle Fialkoff said: "In Jackson Heights-one of the communities hit hardest by the new crown virus, and in areas where park land is scarce-projects like the Northern Playground are particularly important." "We are proud to celebrate. This beautiful new artificial turf field was built for the children of PS 149 and various sports and games in the entire community."

The playground serves PS 149 The Christa McAuliffe School and the surrounding Jackson Heights community.

The upgrade funding came from city council member Daniel Dromm, who allocated $1.75 million in city funding for the project.

“During my 12 years in office, I ensured that every park in my area was renovated,” Drom, who represents the 25th parliamentary district, said in a statement.

Drom, who has a limited term, will leave at the end of the year. He will be replaced by Shekar Krishnan.
