Cotton, foam, and steel make up 75% of a mattress’s weight.

HandUp sells those materials to other companies that will reuse them. Foam ultimately becomes carpet padding. Cotton will be ground up to make filling for items including pet beds. About 5% of the mattresses HandUp receives are gently used. The company cleans, sanitizes, and re-sells them.

Start at the Bottoms is a store dedicated to earth-friendly, reusable products, including cloth baby diapers. Owner Eileen Brennan recently added a refill station, selling products including soap and laundry detergent.

Both HandUp and Start at the Bottoms are located in the renovated Kilburn Mill in New Bedford. The mill has installed more than 1,200 solar panels on its roof, generating 60% of the mill’s electricity.

Organic Bath Co. creates skincare products that are free from artificial fragrances, parabens, fillers, and more. Co-founders Gianne Doherty and Jay Weeks started developing their products in 2014 after Doherty’s skin started reacting to the other products she was using.
