When White County High School’s football team steps back onto the field this fall, they’ll be stepping onto artificial turf. Crews this week began replacing the grass at Warrior Stadium with a durable, synthetic substitute school administrators say will cut down on maintenance costs.

Construction began Monday and crews have been moving dirt all week, according to high school athletic director Lloyd Collins.  Currently, they’ve removed all the sod and are now beginning the process of leveling the dirt down to the final grade for the drainage and underlayment material for the turf.

The price tag for the new field is $950,000. It’s expected to last 10 to 12 years. White County School Superintendent Dr. Laurie Burkett previously estimated that $675,000 of the cost will be recouped in maintenance savings over the next ten years.

The White County Board of Education approved the artificial turf project last fall. It’s being funded by the county’s Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, better known as ESPLOST.

The project is expected to be completed by May 13.
